Is Kalshi legit and safe? What you should know

CFTC-regulated, segregated customer funds, and a few real risks to understand. The straight answer.

Short answer: Yes. Kalshi is a legitimate US exchange, registered with the CFTC as a designated contract market since 2020. Customer money is held separately from Kalshi's own funds under CFTC rules, and it pays out and processes withdrawals like a regulated broker. The real risks are losing trades, state legal fights over sports contracts, and account security, not Kalshi disappearing with your money.

Why Kalshi is legit

  • Federal regulation: CFTC-designated contract market, the same category as futures exchanges.
  • Segregated funds: customer money is kept apart from company money.
  • Identity checks (KYC) and anti-money-laundering controls, like a bank or broker.
  • Mainstream partners: some brokerage apps have offered event contracts routed to Kalshi.

The real risks

  1. Trading losses. You can lose everything you put into a contract.
  2. State disputes. Some states are fighting sports contracts. Kalshi isn't available in Nevada, and markets can be switched off in a state. See are prediction markets legal?
  3. Account security. Use a unique password and turn on two-factor authentication.
  4. Scams using Kalshi's name. Only use kalshi.com and the official apps. Kalshi won't ask for your password by message.

Frequently asked questions

Is my money safe on Kalshi?

Kalshi holds customer funds separately under CFTC rules. Funds at a futures exchange aren't FDIC-insured like a bank account, though, so don't treat your Kalshi balance as savings.

Does Kalshi actually pay out?

Yes. Winning contracts pay $1 each into your balance, and you can withdraw to your bank. See how to withdraw from Kalshi.

Can Kalshi be trusted with my Social Security number?

Kalshi is legally required to verify identities, like brokers and banks. Always sign up through the official site or app.
